Chapter 7
Long ago when humans first emerged from their
primordial existence, the heavens sent forth messengers. These messengers
arrived at the beginning of history, they saw that humans were still attached
to their primal instincts. They fought for scraps of meat, they spontaneously
released their sexual urges on the women of their species. The messengers left
the world of the living, disgusted and appalled.
Thousands of years past and civilization arose. Laws
ruled and units, rather than individuals, chose the courses of action. Those
heavenly messengers once again came to man's world. On the outside they saw
order, peace, and a place free of sin, but that was just the outside.
They shared their knowledge and gave man something
that had long thought they already possessed.
What man was given was a complete soul.
With a completed soul came transcendence, of sorts,
putting in man’s hands the power of gods.
“Demons! Demons come to create anarchy!”
“Why else would they be giving slaves, heathens, and
the like, power such as this?”
“Yes, we must cleanse this world of those demons, so
that true angels may come.”
“Yes, we must cleanse this world of those monsters
and those that have taken to their ways.”
From the farthest reaches of the great eastern land
mass, to the plains of the west, from the frigid northern tip of the world, to
its southern counterpart, man threw off its civil cloak and showed their true
nature.
In the west savages used their crude stone tools to
cut the wings off the angel’s backs. Obsidian blades ripped through their
throats.
In the east, angels were strung up by their wings.
Spears pierced their abdomens, spilling their insides.
The gifts they had given ended their lives. Surely
this can not be man's true nature.
When the gift givers had been taken care of, those
abominable men turned on their fellow man.
“We must never allow this to spread.”
“Yes, if it were to spread, civilization would
crumble, it would be the end of us.”
“Thus, we shall contain this ourselves.”
The emergence of religion followed, and those
flagitious men controlled the hearts and minds of the people. They were saints,
prophets, they worked miracles, using the power they slaughtered so many for
possessing. In time those wicked men faded and were replace by others and the
story of history changed and changed and eventually forgotten.
But still this Church
wished to oppress the people and stop the spread of the enlightened, complete
soul.
“We must stop the spread of this demonic presence!”
“No, we must destroy it, and all that accept the
devil into their hearts.”
“To attempt to destroy it would be like pouring
water on a mount of ants, it would kill some, but some will still emerge from
the carcasses of their allies, and continue doing what they do. We must be
content with suppressing the infestation.”
And that is what they did. Staying in the shadows,
only revealing itself to kill off any societal traces of what they saw as a
disease. Using any means, sacrificing as much as needed to suppress the souls,
the lives of the people.
